Posted by madee998 on April 1st, 2010

Jan 2009 SAD UPDATE on Princess: Noah’s Kingdom is a no-kill shelter and we do everything possible to save each and every cat we are entrusted to care for. Princess was brought to our shelter after her owner died and nobody could care for her. We were told her was 4 years old but out Vet indicated she was closer to age 14. She began to lose weight and was diagnosed with ACUTE KIDNEY FAILURE. Dispite our best efforts to save Princess she lost over half her weight and her health took a rapid decline. Two of our wonderful, caring, and loving volunteers were with Princess when she was euthanized. It is the ultimate gift that an owner or in our case volunteer, can do to ease her suffering when all else has failed. We will miss you Princess. You were loved by all of us at Noah’s Kingdom Humane Society.

About Baby Bunnies

Posted by madee998 on March 31st, 2010

Well, first, if you want to have bunny babies you should read everything you can on the subject and also talk to your local animal shelters and rabbit rescue organizations. (Rabbit overpopulation is a big issue,… it’s usually better to adopt than to breed).

In any case, here are a few essentials you’ll need to know about rabbit babies:

* Rabbits breed very quickly. A female can have a litter of as many as nine babies each month. They can have as many as 200 baby bunnies in one year. In fact, females can get pregnant again as quickly as 24 hours after giving birth.

* You’ll be able to tell if the female is pregnant a few days after conception. Because her hormones are wreaking havoc with her, she will become moody and aggressive. You’ll also be able to feel her nipples growing. Continue to feed her unlimited hay, fresh greens and limited pellets. The mom-to-be should be housed separately for her own health and comfort.

* Once the babies are born, their mom will clean them off. Then, you should remove them from the living area to check on their conditions and take away any babies who did not survive. Keep the nest box with the bunnies inside then take them to nurse from their mom in the morning and in the evening each day.

* You’ll notice the bunnies are born with their eyes closed and naked. Their fur will begin to grow immediately, but it takes time to fill out. The babies will begin opening their eyes when they are between 10 and 13 days old.

* You’ll want to make sure the babies continue to nurse until they are at least two months old. By the third week, they’ll want to start exploring outside of the nesting box. Make sure you have a flat, comfortable surface for them to run around on. You don’t want them to stand on wires because they have tiny feet that could easily get stuck, causing them injury. Refer to the Dietsection of our book (below) for ages the bunnies can begin eating pellets, hay and fresh vegetables and fruit.

* When the babies are seven weeks old, you’ll want to allow them to nurse from their mother only every other day, in order to prepare them for the weaning stage. When they are two months old, you’ll want to wean them completely from their mother’s milk.

* You can tell a male from a female when the male’s testicles drop.

* Start putting the babies in different living quarters when they are approximately three months old.

How To Adopt A Dog

Posted by madee998 on March 30th, 2010

If you have been thinking of getting a new dog, have you considered all the options available to you? The obvious choice people make, when considering a new dog is to go to a specialized dog breeder. A good dog breeder will be able to sell you a puppy that has been checked for genetic problems, diseases etc and will very often provide you with a high quality pedigree dog that should be free from problems that plague a lot of dogs.

This is ideal for a lot of people but of course will come at a price. There is an alternative – adopting a puppy or adult dog.

There are lots of dogs that are without homes at animal shelters or humane societies. These animals are often a victim of circumstance. Either an owner has died, or an elderly person cannot cope any more. Sadly through no fault of their own, they have ended up homeless. Adopting a dog, may be a great way to offer a loving home to one of these dogs.

A lot of people are concerned that they may end up with an unhealthy dog, or a dog that may be aggressive by getting one from a shelter. Most animal shelters will check a dog for good health and good temperament, so if there are any problems you will be told about them. Also, a lot of shelters offer in-house training to increase the chances of a dog finding a new home. Which is great for everybody!

The best way to go about adopting a dog is to pay a visit to your nearest animal shelter. Explain to the staff there, what kind of dog would suit you and your family. Bear in mind that if you have very small children, getting a large dog may not be a good idea. Similarly if you have an apartment, maybe think about getting a small dog that doesn’t require vast amounts of exercise. A bit of forethought before you arrive will make finding the perfect dog for you that much easier.

When you bring your new dog home, try and imagine things from her perspective. Your new dog has probably been through a lot in the past so bringing her to yet another new home may well be overwhelming. The best thing to do is keep her on a leash at first, and gradually introduce her to your home letting her sniff each room until she has got a feel for her new surroundings. Also take her to relieve her bladder outside if she has been on a long car journey with you.

Once she has settled down, allow her to walk freely off the leash inside your home (not outside off the leash yet). This will give her a chance to find ‘her’ spot. By this I mean her favorite place. We all have a favorite spot where we like to go, dogs are no different. If you have bought a new dog bed or blanket for your new arrival, this may be the place to put it. She will naturally go to that spot so having a comfy new bed there will help her settle in.

Your new dog may be very quiet for the first few days but don’t worry, this is part of the settling in process. After a short while your dog will be a fully settled in new member of the family.

Adopting from an animal shelter is a great way to get a new companion and a great way to make a new and happy future for your dog.

One of the reasons why people like to get purebred dogs as pets is because you can usually predict how they are going to behave and what needs they have. This knowledge in advance can help you pick a dog that you know will fit into your lifestyle. But did you know that purebreds make up about twenty five percent of all abandoned pets? This is what the Humane League of the United States has discovered. You should adopt a Yorkie from an animal shelter or Yorkshire Terrier breed rescue rather than buy a puppy.

You need to know some basic Yorkshire Terrier information before you go to the rescue center or to a foster home sheltering a Yorkshire Terrier rescue dog. The advantages to Yorkies are that they are small, need little exercise and like affection. The disadvantages are that they need daily grooming, need a lot of attention and often have accidents in the house. But these are things that are fixable.

There are some things you should expect and brace yourself for before you take on a Yorkshire Terrier rescue dog. You will have to brush your Yorkie every day and trim the coat once a month to keep the dog clean and comfortable. You will either need to go to a professional dog groomer about once a month or learn to trim your dog yourself. Grooming is a great way to bond with your dog.

Another thing about Yorkshire Terrier rescue dogs that you need to know is that they can have housebreaking issues. This is not because they are unable to learn what to do. They have such small bladders that they can’t hold a lot. They need to go outside about every couple of hours. The good news is that a lot of Yorkies are able to be litter trained. But you must expect and prepare for any accidents.

Yorkshire Terriers, rescues or not, are all more fragile than other breeds of dog.

They are even more fragile than a cat. However, the bigger the Yorkie, usually the sturdier they are. Don’t let other dogs or kids play roughly with the dog. If a dog gets hurt, especially a Yorkshire Terrier rescue dog, they can bite out of the fear that the pain has brought them. This gentle treatment is one reason why Yorkies are popular with senior citizens.

Another thing to realize with Yorkshire Terrier rescue dogs is that they are probably not going to look like the Yorkies on televised dog shows. Many Yorkies can wind up in shelters just because they fall short in their looks somewhere, instead of for personality problems. Your Yorkie may weigh over seven pounds, have a lot of black patches, may have a full tail or a tail held very low, may have an over bite or dewclaws. They are still purebred Yorkies.

Don’t you just hate it when you upload your new video and instantly receive email like this from youtube: “Information about your video ” Youtube compares your sound track to sound-bytes provided by music publishers. If there is a match, you get an automated violation notice and your video may be disabled, silenced, or given permission to proceed with advertisements attached. I volunteer at an animal shelter and I save lives by making videos of adoptable cats. My theory is that people are more likely to rescue or adopt a cat if they can meet the cat in a video. I try to see the individual personality in each cat and then I try to portray them as living, sentient beings with their own distinctive characteristics. A good song goes a long way toward helping me tell each story. It helps set the pace and very often supplies words that could be the cat’s own story or, perhaps just our human reaction to the particular cat. When Youtube disables the audio or the entire video it makes my job more difficult and cats can die. If they stick around long enough to get sick and they fail to respond to medicine they’re out for good! Same thing if another one starts going crazy from being caged too long. They are pronounced unadoptable and it’s Curtains for them!

The Pros and Cons of Hiring Dog Trainers

Posted by madee998 on March 25th, 2010

Either for reasons such as learning agility training, whether for fun or competition, or for simply helping an out of control dog to learn how to behave better or perform simple commands, more pet owners are considering hiring a professional dog trainer instead of attempting to train their dogs themselves.

Here are a few pros and cons to consider before hiring a professional dog trainer:

The Pros of Hiring Dog Trainers

1. Professional knowledge of how dogs think, feel, and act is the first perk of hiring a dog trainer, either for teaching your dog the basic commands, or for turning them into an extremely well trained pet, or even a prize winning show animal.

2. Besides the peace of mind that your beloved pet is being properly trained, hiring a trainer is a great alternative if you are unable to offer the consistency or the level of physical activity needed for successfully training your dog.

3. Using a dog trainer gives you the option of hiring one who does private visits in the home, which is helpful for dogs who may not have been socialized properly, or who don’t appreciate being around other animals. Alternately, many trainers have group sessions or classes and allow owners to participate and learn as well.

The Cons of Hiring Dog Trainers

1. The first negative of hiring a dog trainer to consider is the cost involved. Although many trainers offer very reasonable rates and services, there are also those who are quite expensive, but will provide excellent results nonetheless.

2. The second con for hiring dog trainers would be simply finding the available time to make the appointments. Some trainers will come into the home, while others will expect you to travel to them, and while most usually have flexible hours to accommodate those who work or who have hectic schedules, many still find it hard to find the free time necessary that professional dog training will require.

3. In some cases, a dog just doesn’t respond well to be trained by anyone other than their trusted owners. In this instance, instead of “forcing” the dog to participate in training sessions, or be distressed, it’s best to try to tackle the issues yourself, albeit with the guidance of a trained professional. There are many dog trainers who provide advice and helpful training tips for a fee, but without actually being with the animal. Also, the internet, library, humane society, or local animal shelter should all have useful information about the various methods and aspects of dog training.

Regardless if you’ve decided on training your dog yourself, or if you’ve opted for hiring a professional dog trainer, the most important part to remember is how the dog is responding to being trained. Do they seem to enjoy it, or do they seem agitated and out of sorts? Are they able to perform the tasks expected of them in training sessions, or do they seem intimidated and fearful?

Training should always be a positive experience for your dog, giving them a physical outlet to keep them fit and healthy, but also giving them mental stimulation as well.

Dog Training Methods

Posted by madee998 on March 22nd, 2010

There are so many concepts and ways of training your dog. Dog training for some are categorized into types methods of training that they used. For puppies dog crate training can be a challenge. Training your pet dogs to sleep on an air filled dog bed is also a challenge. Transport dog crates are very convenient use for travel but you also need to train your pet dogs.

For most people who train their pet animals they will use the reward system. Whereby their pets are basically being bribe to do something in exchange for a toy or food. This system is not bad but there are drawbacks. This system is widely used by the popular pet name companies because it is politically correct.

When using these way of training your pet dogs tend not to listen especially if rewards being offered is not worth. Sometimes the task that is being ask of them is not worth for their effort. The results will be that these dogs will be dominant, anti social and pushy at times. The sad part is that some of these will end up in animal shelters.

The opposite of these types of trainers are those that force and intimidate their pet dogs to do what they want. It is the old school type training. It is understood that people who trained their pet animals this way are known to be under pressure for time. In short time is money. These method can be done in a short period of time.

The problem with these method is that the dogs will seldom like their handlers or trainers. so end up with a dog that when ask to do something will just tuck his tail or lay to the ground

and do not want to do anything.

Now that you have two contrasting ways of training, you can decide for yourself what to do. Before you start on the training process, you have to understand that dogs are a pack of animals and will follow their pack leader. So need their respect in order to have control and consistency in their training.

The best way or system of training your pet dogs is to incorporate these two contrasting methods of training. There has to be a time where you can reward them and have to use some distraction methods or some sort of punishment if they disobey you. In other words you have to balance between giving them rewards for good behavior and punishment for disobedient. It will not be easy but if you can do that you are giving yourself and your dog a favour.

To be respected by your dog you have to gain their respect and maintain leadership role with your pet dogs. Whether you are training them on an air filled dog bed, dog crate training or a transport dog crates you have to maintain your leadership role as a pack leader.

Most of us love our dogs and feel committed to them for the rest of their lives, but sometimes, bad dog behavior can test us to our limits and we may wonder just how much more we can take. A dog with behavior problems can ruin a good family atmosphere and be an embarrassment when guests call or you are out walking your dog.

There really is no such thing as a bad dog, but there are dogs that have begun to show these tendencies because they have been abused, have developed physical illnesses or psychiatric problems. They may have been mistrained or simply aren’t a match for their current owners. You need to know the kind of dog you have on your hands to determine your next course of action.

If this sounds familiar, it’s time to take stock and get to the route of the problem. Begin by asking yourself some important questions and answer them as honestly as you can.

Is it possible you might be part of the problem? Did you take time to have your dog socialized and properly trained? Are you sure you know the correct way to handle your breed of dog and what are his particular needs? Are their any underlying health problems that your vet may discover if you take him for a check up?

If you’ve tried everything it could well be that you and your dog are not compatible with each other. Not all dogs are right for all people.

Dogs differ in personality, exercise requirements, and dominance expectations. It could be that you have have chosen a breed of dog whose nature isn’t a good match for your lifestyle or home.

If you come to the conclusion that you’ve done your best, and the relationship between you and your dog cannot be turned around, you owe it to the both of you to find a more suitable home for the dog as quickly as possible.

Your dog could need special help and training so an animal shelter should be a last resort as they rarely have the time to give the special attention that your dog may need and most don’t bother to verify if any new home would be a good match for a dog with special requirements.

Interview any prospective new owners to explain the kind of attention and training that their new dog will need from them. Try to be as honest as you can and after a few months, it is not unusual for a misbehaved dog to experience a dramatic turnaround and become a happy integrated member of the family, when placed in a more suitable home.
